PREVIOUS 40 DAY CROSS WALK IN 2002

Pastor Jack walks with a cross through local communities

In 2002 God directly challenged me to take the message of the cross to the people of Belfast by doing a 40 Day Cross Walk through the streets of the Shankill and Falls and around the wall that has divided these communities since 1969. I was apprehensive at first, but it was so amazing from Day 1.

The story of the Cross Walk is detailed in Jack's second book 'The Cross and the Gun'

Cross Vigil

7 Week Cross Vigil at the Dividing Wall in Belfast
(Excluding Sundays = 40 Days)

Starting Wed 9 Sept until Sat 24 October

In December 2006 Pastor Jack's New Life City Church purchased a warehouse on the dividing line between the Protestant Shankill and the Catholic Falls communities, with half of the building on one side of the dividing line and half on the other side, but although the New Life Church and Stadium Youth Projects paid out £1.1 million to purchase the building they have been refused funding from the European Peace III Fund, and from the Department of Social Development (DSD) for the refurbishment of the warehouse into a major community facility called City LIFE Centre.

Pastor Jack feels he has no other option but to raise the profile of his work to the people of Northern Ireland, Ireland and beyond. Several years ago he walked with a cross for 40 days around the Shankill and the Falls communities. He even stopped off at the Sinn Fein office on the Falls Road and left them the gift of a mirror. On the mirror was a Celtic Cross along with the words of a Bible verse printed in Gaelic, which was John 3:16.

Pastor Jack now plans to stand for 40 days on the dividing line between the Protestant Shankill and the Catholic Falls. This will be between the dividing gates in Northumberland Street, which are attached to the warehouse he plans to turn into City LIFE Centre. He will be there every day from 12 noon until 3 pm for 40 days (except Sundays = 7 weeks) from Wednesday 9 September until Saturday 24 October. During this 40 Day/7 Week Cross Vigil Pastor Jack intends to hold high the same cross he had carried for 40 days and to do so again as a symbol of peace, but this time while standing alone in the centre of the wall that represents division.

The 40 days will conclude with a special concert in the warehouse/City LIFE Centre. Special guests will be the Waterford and Omagh Peace Choir. The event will be attended by Political Dignitaries and will be open to the general public. The event will be free, but an opportunity during the event will be given to enable those present to make donations towards the refurbishment of the warehouse.

Pastor Jack says, "I remember standing at this section of the dividing line in 1971 and watching Arthur Blessitt walk through this very gate that goes across the road, shutting at nights to keep the communities apart. I also remember at that time, in a riot situation, watching a truck being driven towards the closed gate at speed from the other side. We saw a man jump out just before impact. We had seconds to respond, but as we ran the truck exploded and the gates, as they were then, were blown apart. Thankfully no one was seriously injured, but this is the very gate that is attached to our building and is where I will stand with the cross for 7 weeks".

He goes on to say that he does not have bonfires to sell, or murals to sell, or weapons to sell (people in Northern Ireland will understand the context of this!), but he does have integrity and a passion, which are not for sale, to see this building used by people on both sides of the divide.

CT Studd said, "Some wish to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell".

City LIFE Centre is where dreams will become reality; where people will be encouraged to reach high; to seek to go far; to look beyond the shallow and to dream big dreams. For "Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be." Karen Ravn

Brenda McKee, Grand Rapids. Michigan says, "Dare to dream again". She goes on to say, "A poor person is not the one who only has a dime - a truly poor person is the one who doesn’t have a dream". Brenda is legally blind and was told by doctors she would never walk again due to Multiple Sclerosis, bur she says, "Despite what doctors have said I am still walking and my dream is to help others know Christ and never lose HOPE for we serve the GOD of HOPE". www.brendamckee.com

WORLD PRAYER MAP

Some people have already said they will be standing alongside me in prayer. This is awesome.

However, it gave me the further idea of having a "World Prayer Map" showing where people are, across the world, who will be standing with me in prayer. If you can purpose to be one of those it would be great to know and also to know where in the world you are.

Likewise, if you church collectively will be praying at some point during those weeks, it would be great to know the name and location of the church.

On behalf of City LIFE Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where Dreams become reality.

To be added to this Prayer Map, please let me have your name, location, and church. Email pastorjack@btinternet.com

Prayer Points

I am already taking calls and doing interviews for Radio and Newspapers. Television will soon be onto me soon.

Please pray for the following:

For wisdom to say the right things during interviews
For divine connections to help promote this event
For positive responses from both communities
For good health to be maintained throughout
For strength to stand regardless of the weather or negative responses
For protection against some rogue attack (especially when I might be standing alone)
For other events to promote the broad work of New Life City Church
For the powerful positive message of the Cross to be seen and heard with clarity
For God's will to be accomplished regarding City LIFE Centre
For a host of praying people who will stand with me across the world in prayer

The vision of New Life City Church is: "To be a God influence to the city and beyond" May this Cross Vigil be a major time of influence for God to the city of Belfast and beyond.

Prayer Objectives

1. To have at least 1,000 individuals signed up to pray at some point during the 7 Week Cross Vigil

2. To have at least 100 churches, representing 1,000's more.

3. To connect believers from across the world in prayer for this event while it is taking place.

However, I will not assume anything and will not add your name or the name of your church unless you submit your details and commit to pray at some point during the 7 Weeks.

Keep in mind that 12 noon - 3 pm is 7 am - 10 am NY/Eastern Time

Final Prepartions - Two days to go

I got my "Wet Suit" today! So I am now ready for anything!!!

Some of us spent the morning clearing the site, where I'll be standing, from over grown weeds. The area is in "no man's land" between two dividing gates, with Catholics on one side and Protestants on the other side. These gates close at night, but open in the mornings. During the daytime there would be lots of traffic driving through the gates either way; there would also be people walking on foot; people who work in the area or who are tourists passing through looking for something to photograph.

The red brick building is our new centre "City LIFE Centre". We just secured a bank loan this week for £250,000. I tried everything to secure the funds by other means, but no matter how hard I tried (and God knows I tried) nothing was happening. We will now need to pay £1,800 per month for the next 15 years; or perhaps some other means might become available. We will move into this building for our first official service as New Life City Church on Sunday 25 October. However, until then we still have a lot to do and I still have a 7 week Cross Vigil to get through! Thanks again to all who have signed up or have contacted me to let me know you will be praying. Your prayers are much appreciated.

Towards the end of the 7 week Cross Vigil I have planned 3 other major events that will draw individuals, community groups, and churches together from both sides of the wall; not for religious or ecumenical purposes, but for the purpose of promoting peace. These events will be as follows:

1. "Human Peace Wall" - stretching from the Falls to the Shankill - Sat. 17 Oct. 12 noon

2. The Planting of a Peace Pole - the first of its kind in Northern Ireland - Sat. 24 Oct. 2.45 pm

3. "United in Hope" concert - the first event in the refurbished City LIFE Centre - Sat. 24 Oct. 7.30 pm.

At the "United in Hope" concert those present will be given an opportunity to make donations towards the refurbishment of the building so we can immediately pay off "some" of the bank loan.

Things to pray for:

1. That I will not have to use my Wet Suit! (tongue in cheek!).
2. That regardless of the weather I will be able to take each day as it comes.
3. For physical strength to enable me to stand for 3 hours each day.
4. That I do not get the swine flu or some other illness.
5. That this will be a witness to the people of Belfast and beyond.
6. That many lives will be touched by the lifting of the cross in this manner.
7. That people will commit their lives to following Jesus Christ.
8. That our work will be fully recognised, supported and resourced.

During the past week we have given out 5,000 leaflets on both sides of the wall to promote the Cross Vigil. Some of us have gone into homes, community centres and churches on both sides of the wall to promote the Cross Vigil, the Human Peace Wall and the Peace Pole (an idea I got from Fort Collins in 1997!). We are going into the highways and the byways; we are going into the market places; we are going into our Jerusalem, and into our Judea, and into our Samaria. We are going into the enemy's camp and we're taking back what the devil has stolen from us.

Please continue to stand with us in prayer.
