Starting Sunday 23 September in Santa Monica CA Ending Wednesday 24 October in St. Simons Island GA Northern Ireland has experienced serious conflict since 1969 during which time over 3,700 people lost their lives, while tens of thousands were seriously injured and maimed. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, has been a divided city with many concrete walls across the city keeping communities apart. There are genuine aspirations for these walls to come down, but much work still needs to be done. “Cycle ‘CROSS’ America” will highlight the need for these walls to come down and will encourage Americans to support our efforts in building good neighbour relations that will lead to the pulling down of these walls. The Team will consist of 4 main Cyclists (2 from the Catholic side and 2 from the Protestant side of the Main Dividing Wall in Belfast that stands between the Catholic Falls community and the Protestant Shankill community). The Team Leader (driving the support van) will be Jack McKee, Pastor of New Life City Church and Director of City Life Centre, a building that literally straddles the Main Dividing Wall, with half of the building on one side of the wall and half on the other side. There will also be a sixth person (a cyclist) who will provide valuable support In 2002 Pastor Jack carried a 7 foot cross for 40 days around both sides of the Main Dividing Wall in Belfast for the purpose of lifting the cross as a symbol of peace above the gun – a symbol of division and war. In 2005 he carried the same cross through his own community in defiance of local terrorists who, that very day, had murdered a friend of his by shooting him 7 times. It 2009, with the same cross, he did a 40 Day Cross Vigil while standing between the main dividing gates in this same dividing wall for three hours each day. This year, 2012, Jack and several other men will again stand between these same gates for another 40 days with the same cross to promote peace between the divided communities. Jack now intends to bring that same cross to the USA and to "Cycle ‘CROSS’ America”, bringing that same cross from the west coast to the east coast of the USA.
WHY? For the following 3 main reasons: 1) Ireland has contributed so much to the USA including Neil Armstrong (the first man to walk on the moon), Davy Crocket (who died at the Alamo), 17 US Presidents, many preachers and teachers, besides 43 million of its “present” citizens. As a gift from Ireland to the USA in 2012 we want to "lift the cross" above America as a symbol of peace in the weeks leading up to the Presidential Elections. 2) We want to lift the profile of the great work taking place in Ireland in building positive community relations aimed at ultimately bringing down the dividing walls and building lasting peace and prosperity in some of the most troubled and deprived areas of Europe that’s shared equally on both sides of the dividing wall. 3) We need to do some serious fundraising to support cross community programs based at City Life Centre, the building on the wall. Our target is $250,000. This might seem high, but if we want to make a difference, we need to be serious about what we do and we need to raise significant funds. Programmes will include Personal Development Programs for disadvantaged youth, pre-school day care for disadvantaged children, after school care for children with special needs, Respite Services for families with adults and children with special needs. 20% of what we raise in the USA will be donated to two US Charities; one on the west coast and one on the east coast.

West Coast: “Atara Ramoth Ministry”, formed in 1985 to help youth out of drugs and alcohol and to help young run-a-ways turn their lives around. A.R.M. is extended to provide spiritual and practical support to disadvantaged young people and their families when resources permit. East Coast: “Arms Around Morris County” (AAMC) that works with single moms living below the poverty line, a non profit that has gained the respect of local and county governments, doing a great job, but with limited resources. AAMC is a community project of Morris Plains Vineyard Church. Donations to “Cycle CROSS America” can be made at anytime before, during or after the event.
